Hey everyone! After finishing my Dreamy Petal Shawl, I had a small bundle of yarn left over that I wasn't sure what to do with, so I came up with the great idea of using it for a mini scrunchie - thus the Mini Scrunchie Pattern was born!
Since I started crocheting over a year ago, I have made a lot of scrunchies; some for myself, some for friends. They've become one of my favourite quick and easy projects to make and they make great gifts!
This scrunchie took me approx. 15-20 mins to make (depending on skill level) and it used approximately 5g of yarn leftover from my ball of Caron Latte Cake, so this is the perfect project for scraps of yarn leftover at the end of a project, and it's great for beginners too!
Materials
Any amount of leftover yarn - for this scrunchie I used what was leftover from my Yarnspirations Caron latte Cake yarn, which was approx. 5g in DK weight.
Your hook should be a size or two smaller than the recommended hook size for the yarn you're using - For this scrunchie I used a size 4.5mm hook, but the recommended hook size for the yarn is 5.5mm
Hair tie - I would highly recommend using a metal/glue free hair tie as they are a lot more flexible and less likely to snap over time
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Stitches
This pattern uses US crochet terms
CHAIN (CH)
SINGLE CROCHET (SC): Insert your hook, Yarn over (YO), pull up a loop, YO, pull through remaining two loops
DOUBLE CROCHET (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops, YO, pull through remaining two loops
SLIP STITCH (SL ST): Insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop, pull loop through loop on your hook
Notes
This pattern will work for any yarn, however, thicker yarns will make a bigger scrunchie and thinner yarns will make smaller scrunchies.
The pattern is adaptable for the amount of yarn you have, so you don't need to have exactly the amount that I had.
I have included a video at the end of this post showing how to make this scrunchie, if you are struggling to understand the steps, see the video for help.
This pattern is made in rounds, meaning that you will not turn at the end of a row, but instead SL ST to the top of your first stitch in the round and then begin the second round.
Stitches that are repeated are in between the '* *' symbols
Method
Start by inserting your hook into the hair tie, CH 2
Round 1: SC 45 over the hair tie, SL ST into the chain made at the beginning of the round
You will need to keep pulling the stitches together to make space for the 45 stitches
If you are using a different size of yarn, SC until the entire hair tie is covered and the stitches are tight together, this will ensure that your scrunchie has a good amount of stretch to it (the number of stitches doesn't necessarily matter, just as long as the whole hair tie is covered)
Round 2: CH 2 (counts as a DC), DC into the same space you made the SL ST, *2 DC into the next stitch* repeat until the end, SL ST into the chain space from beginning of the round, fasten off and weave in ends
If you find yourself running low on yarn half way through Round 2, you can alternate between doing 1 DC in one stitch and 2 DC in the next until the end, to save the usage of your yarn.
When weaving in your ends, make sure your stitches are secure. Because this is a scrunchie, it is going to be pulled a lot and that can risk your stitches coming undone.

Thank you for checking out my pattern, I know it's only a quick and simple one, but even simple patterns are worth sharing and who could resist making something that looks as cute as this scrunchie does!
